The years with Nick had made Sofia paranoid. She knew that and tried to work around it. She tried not to worry about being followed and tried not to imagine a threat in every person that approached her. Her pulse rose as she left the gated area and the protection that the TSA checkpoint provided. Even here, in the mass of bodies disembarking the plane, she felt Logan’s presence. He watched her and it added a different kind of excitement to the march through the airport. For once, she didn’t fight the sense of being watched, she reveled in it. She added a little sway to her hips and a smile to her lips, wondering if Logan could see. More, she wondered if it got to him.

It was thrilling in an odd way, this cloak-and-dagger game she played with Logan as he kept pace behind her, to the right at the moment, behind a loud family with too many kids and not enough sense to keep them all together. Sofia had to slow down so she didn’t lose him in the mass of bodies rolling toward baggage claim.

Over the years, Sofia had developed a knack for avoiding unwanted contact as she glided through a crowd, because contact could come in the form of a knife just as easily as someone trying to cop a feel. The crowd parted for her as the quick tap of her heels urged everyone out of her way. Logan kept dozens of people between them, even took an adjacent escalator to maintain the separation, but she still knew exactly where he walked. His energy was like a lucky charm she carried with her. She almost turned, just to see his face, but that would ruin the illusion of separation. Moments later, someone called his name.

“Hey, Stone, where’s your girl?”

Sofia tripped on her heels. She double stepped to get her stride under control and looked around, trying not to panic. She always had an out, always found a loophole. She saw it ahead and to the right. A bathroom she knew had an exit on the other side. Ten steps and she’d be there, but she didn’t know how much time she had before the man calling out to Logan recognized Sofia.

The stroll through the airport no longer felt like a game.
